The History of Turner
The story behind Turner starts in 1970
Ted Turner, then head of a successful Atlanta-based outdoor advertising firm, purchased WJRJ-Atlanta, Channel 17, a small, struggling UHF station. He renamed it WTCG, for the parent company Turner Communications Group. Through careful programming acquisitions, Turner guided the station to success. In December 1976, WTCG originated the "superstation" concept, transmitting via satellite to cable systems.
In 1979, the company changed its name to Turner Broadcasting Systems and the call letters of its flagship entertainment network to WTBS.
In 1980, the company broke new ground with the launch of CNN, the first 24-hour all-news network, forever changing the way the world saw breaking news. Today, CNN services reach nearly one billion people around the globe.
In the 1990's
TNT Classic Movies and Cartoon Network Europe launch in 1993 in five languages via cable and satellite. By 1996 both become available in 33 countries across Europe and received by 31 million households. Both these channels continue to grow in 1996 as distribution extends into the Middle East.
CNN grows across Spain, Turkey and Japan, both on television and online. In 1999 CNN Mobile launches. This is the first mobile telephone news and information service available globally with targeted regional content.
Today
Turner has grown at a phenomenal pace, employing 9,000 people worldwide. We create and program branded news, entertainment, animation and young adult media environments on television and other platforms for consumers around the world. This includes TBS, Turner Network Television (TNT), Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies (TCM), truTV, Adult Swim, Boomerang and, of course, Cable News Network (CNN) across several continents. Our pioneering spirit continues into digital media with CNN launching major IPTV and VOD outlets. Bringing us to the present day where in 2008 we launched CN and TNT in Turkey and, in 2009, TNT in Germany.

Benefits
Social Responsibility
From the time we were founded, Turner. has proudly supported community efforts through employee volunteerism, special initiatives and charitable contributions.
In the last year alone 20 of our staff from London, Madrid and Milan have volunteered to raise money and go out and build a fully equipped school in Mali. We’ve dressed up as much loved cartoon characters to help promote charities and offered Internships to people from minorities or who have disabilities. Our Caretoon Network was set up to help members such as 4Children, The Association of Children’s Hospices, Barnardo’s, Childline, The Children’s Society, Mencap, the National Children’s Bureau, NSPCC and UNICEF.
To see the kind of charities and projects you could get involved with there’s a lot more to see at:

Working Culture
Casablanca to Robot Chicken. Highly respected journalism to the Wacky Races. The fun, quality and pride in our brands is everywhere to be seen. Whether you’re in the Cartoon Network merchandise shop or on the CNN news floor, you’ll find a relaxed and sociable (but hard working!) team.
We often get asked if being part of a large American corporation is a bit daunting. Our answer, always, is that no one feels that here. TimeWarner and TBS Inc. have resolutely held ethics. We look after people, we offer opportunity and everyone works across the brands to make TBS a success.
